Snus: An Overview
Snus is a smokeless tobacco product originating from Sweden. Unlike Cuban cigars, which are smoked but not inhaled, snus is consumed without combustion. It consists of finely ground tobacco, typically placed under the upper lip, where nicotine is absorbed through the gums. Unlike chewing tobacco, snus does not require spitting.
Types:
- Loose Snus (Lössnus): Traditional, loose powder for customizable portions.
- Portion Snus: Pre-packed in small pouches, often available in white (drier) and original (moist) varieties.
Key Characteristics:
- Ingredients: Tobacco, water, salt, and sometimes flavorings.
- Strength: Varies in nicotine content, with some extra-strong varieties available.
- Flavors: Ranges from classic tobacco to mint, citrus, and licorice.
Health Considerations:
While not risk-free, snus is often considered a less harmful alternative to smoking, as it lacks combustion and thus reduces exposure to harmful tar and carcinogens. Swedish snus use is linked to lower smoking rates and tobacco-related health issues in Sweden compared to other countries.
Legal Status:
Snus is widely used in Sweden and Norway, but its sale is banned in most other European Union countries, with the exception of Sweden.
